You could always use the longer crochet hooks made for the "afghan" stitch or "Tunisian" crochet. Maybe even a pair of cro-hooks!

When I was making swatches using this method I tried it with regular knitting needles and afghan hooks. Personally I found the hooks bothersome and they got in the way. Too much effort had to made to make sure the hook wasn't snagging something it shouldn't and to have it facing the right way to grab the yarn when it was suppose to!! LOL I guess it all boils down to what you are use to.

There are Portuguese knitting needles available. I just saw some online somewhere for sale here in the states. Sorry I can't remember where....Webs maybe??? I'm prob'ly wrong though. :-)

I found some to order from a shop in Berkeley, CA -- I bought two sets, both the larger-sized set and the smaller-sized set. Sets have just one per size. Site is: http://www.lacis.com -- do a search for "hook" and scroll down through the various hooks until you see the description. (There was no picture.)

I think individual sizes are also available. If you want to knit, you'd obviously need two of a given size.
